Fatou H. Jobe is a PhD student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she also earned her master’s degree in African Studies. She received a BA in Economics from the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on international fisheries processes, gendered dynamics within the industry, local environmental perception, and the sustainable development logic associated with fisheries industrialization and development in The Gambia. Her master’s thesis linked fishmeal production in The Gambia to environmental violence. She will extend her master’s research into her PhD by examining how women fish vendors and smokers protest and negotiate global fisheries processes in The Gambia.
