Asanda-Jonas Benya (PhD) is a Sociologist and Ethnographer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town. Her research interests revolve around critical labour, gender, and feminist studies. Her main research project is an ethnographic study of women underground miners in South Africa’s platinum mines. She has published in labour and feminist journals in areas of her research. Benya is the co-editor of the recently published multi-volume series, The Lives of Extraction: Identities, Communities and the Politics of Place and The Afterlives of Extraction: Alternatives and Sustainable Futures (Brill 2023). She is currently a 2024–25 Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), Stanford University.
